Our work in Salem Lakes

Remodeling and building in Salem Lakes.

Salem Lakes covers a lot of ground. The village formed in 2017 when the Town of Salem and the Village of Silver Lake merged, so the housing is varied: homes by the lakes and the Fox River, in village centers and out on rural roads. We work across all of it. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, decks, roofs, windows, siding, flooring and tile are all jobs we take on here, and each house gets its own plan.

Our base in Twin Lakes is under nine miles away. You get a free written estimate and a free design, and the same crew stays on the job from first measurement to final sweep. We are licensed, insured and bonded, and we offer discounts for military, seniors, teachers, first responders and people with disabilities. Permits here run through Kenosha County, and we walk you through that process.

The area

About Salem Lakes.

Salem Lakes is a Kenosha County village formed on February 14, 2017, when the Town of Salem and the Village of Silver Lake merged. The 2020 Census counted 14,601 residents. The village covers roughly 33 square miles and takes in Salem, Silver Lake, Camp Lake, Trevor, Wilmot, Benet Lake and Lake Shangrila, among other communities. The Fox River runs through it, and Silver Lake Park alone covers 260 acres. Of its 6,319 housing units in 2020, 5,648 were occupied and 413 were kept for seasonal use. With lakefront, river and rural land in one village, floodplain and septic questions can come up in remodeling.

Projects

What we build in Salem Lakes.

Local conditions shape the work. Here is what we pay attention to in Salem Lakes.

01

Lakeside decks and porches

Lots on Camp Lake, Silver Lake and other lakes often call for decks, composite decking or screened-in porches. Shoreland rules may affect where they can sit.

02

Roofs and siding on rural homes

Rural properties often have older roofs and siding that need full replacement. We check decking, flashing and trim as the old material comes off.

03

Basements near the river

Near the Fox River and the lakes, we check for moisture before finishing a basement, then plan walls and flooring that can handle some dampness.

04

Kitchens and baths

Owners live in 4,697 of the village's 5,648 occupied homes (2020 Census). For homes people plan to keep, a free design shows the plan before work starts.

Every trade

Everything we do, in Salem Lakes.

One crew handles the whole list, so a kitchen and a new roof can share one schedule.

Good to know

Permits and local details.

Every town has its own rules. Here is what we found for Salem Lakes.

Permits go through Kenosha County

Building and zoning permitting for Salem Lakes has moved to Kenosha County. You apply through the county's online portal, eTRAKiT, using a public or contractor account, and a county building inspector handles inspections. The village still issues driveway permits on village-owned roads. Rules and fees change, so we check the current steps with you and walk you through them.

Fox River and floodplain

Kenosha County describes the Fox River's flooding as frequent and severe, and its mitigation program buys homes in the 100-year floodplain in Salem Lakes and the Town of Wheatland. The village updated its floodplain ordinance in 2024 and also has a shoreland permit application. If your home is near the river or Camp and Center Lakes, check the maps before planning an addition.

Septic systems and additions

Where a home is not on public sewer, a larger remodel can bring in the county. Kenosha County says adding to a home can require a new septic evaluation, and systems are sized by bedroom count. Only a licensed master plumber can get the state sanitary permit. We bring this up early, before plans are final.

Who issues building permits in Salem Lakes?

Kenosha County's Planning and Development division handles building and zoning permits for the village, and you apply through the county's eTRAKiT portal. Salem Lakes Village Hall still issues driveway permits for village-owned roads. Because the village moved these services to the county, we check the current steps with you before any application goes in.

If we use a septic system, do we need county approval for an addition?

It can happen. The county says adding to a home may require a new septic evaluation with soil test data from a state-licensed evaluator, since systems must meet current code. They are sized by bedroom count. Ask the county early, especially if the addition adds a bedroom. We can help you line that up with the design.

Do you work in Silver Lake, Camp Lake and Trevor as well as Salem?

Yes. All of Salem Lakes is inside our service area, which reaches about 45 minutes around Twin Lakes. Permit questions differ by location: floodplain near the river, shoreland near a lake, septic on rural lots. We sort that out during the free estimate, before the design is final.
